SDG's GOALS

In this lesson, I learned several things. Mrs. Wiwin asked us to form a discussion group and discuss a number of things. Starting from poverty, education, equality, to climate issues. Coincidentally, my group got a part to discuss poverty issues.

I work with three other friends, namely Rofa, Nikita, and also Rafa. Actually, I'm quite often in the same discussion group with them in this English class, but it's still fun. We share ideas and opinions on this poverty problem, especially what is happening in Indonesia. We also divide tasks so that work can be completed more quickly, the division of tasks is based on the points that we will discuss. And from the results of our discussions, we obtained several conclusions which are outlined in the following infographic form.

First, we discussed the meaning of poverty. and it is known that poverty is about not having enough money to meet basic needs including food, clothing and shelter. However, poverty is more, much more than just not having enough money. The term poverty refers to the state or condition in which people or communities lack the financial resources and essentials for a minimum standard of living. As such, their basic human needs cannot be met. Each nation may have its own criteria for determining the poverty line and counting how many of its people live in poverty. At the societal level, high poverty rates can be a damper on economic growth and be associated with problems like crime, unemployment, urban decay, education, and poor health.

Then, we discuss about the causes of poverty. After doing a search, it can be seen that the biggest cause of poverty in recent years is Covid-19. Where most people, especially in Indonesia, are experiencing a financial crisis due to the termination of their work contracts due to the co-19 pandemic. And this causes the poverty rate in Indonesia to be even higher. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic reversed the steady progress of poverty reduction over the past 25 years. This unprecedented reversal is being further exacerbated by rising inflation and the impacts of the war in Ukraine. It is estimated these combined crises will lead to an additional 75 million-95 million people living in extreme poverty in 2022 compared with pre- pandemic projections. Almost all countries have introduced new short-term social protection measures in response to the COVID-19 crisis to protect people’s health, jobs and income. If these measures continue, they will provide the needed assistance for the poor and help them move out of poverty.

Apart from that, we also discussed the poverty rate in the world. By 2020, only 47% of the global population were effectively covered by at least one social protection cash benefit, leaving 4.1 billion people unprotected. In response to the COVID-19 crisis, more than 1,700 social protection measures (mostly short-term) were announced by 209 countries and territories. Even before COVID-19, baseline projections suggested that 6 percent of the global population would still be living in extreme poverty in 2030, missing the target of ending poverty. The fallout from the pandemic threatens to push over 70 million people into extreme poverty.

And for the last one, we discuss how to overcome poverty, especially in Indonesia. What we have to do now is reduce poverty. Focusing on how to stop poverty is very important, both in the ways that an individual can have an impact and on the wider changes that need to be made to bring an end to poverty. We found several ways to overcome this, starting from improving skills, getting a good education, equitable development, and income stability. We hope that there will be no more cases of poverty in Indonesia. And the poverty rate did not soar back like previous years.

For me, learning through discussion is fun, especially when we have mastered the material that will be discussed with friends. and I hope that in the future there will be new material that is much more interesting to be discussed in the discussion forum.

That's all the things that I convey in my article this time, see you in the next post.
